On November 1, 2016, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board advised that it would extend Period I of Exploration Licence (EL ) 1120 to January 14, 2019, subject to the filing of an amended Drilling Deposit and Security Deposit for this extended period. The licence is located off Newfoundland’s west coast. These were Fundamental Decisions of the Board under the Atlantic Accord Acts that have received approvals from the federal and provincial Ministers of Natural Resources.

President Ed Martin brought the big news to the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association’s annual general meeting Thursday. He said seismic and satellite surveys reveal the new basins.

While the Jeanne d’Arc basin on the Grand Banks contains a number of oil fields and discoveries, most of the over twenty other Newfoundland and Labrador basins are underexplored relative to comparable jurisdictions, like the United Kingdom and Norway.
